This is old stuff, but I was beaten by this problem a year or two ago and I just took it on again and came up with a solution. Many people, including me, bought Nomad MuVo 4.0 GB MP3 players that had had the fine 4 Gig drive removed. I got the shell for a low price and then tried to put a smaller card in. Sometimes it works, but usually, when the unit is disconnected from the USB (even though it is done correctly) a "Smartscan Failed" error pops up, saying you disconnected improperly and suggesting you run scandisk.
After several hours of testing, I have found a workaround. Here is how to get started:
1. When booting into recovery mode, go ahead and reformat (the reformatting shouldn't have to be repeated)
2. Then, without rebooting, go to the "connect to PC" selection, hook up the USB and transfer the mp3 files over to the Muvo.
3. Properly disconnect, and then, on the Muvo, go to the reboot tab.
4. On my unit, at least, it works and I am able to play what was loaded.
Now -- to add or take off files -- this is the key:
1. Take the battery out, hold down the menu key, and put the battery back in. This will force the unit into recovery mode.
2. Go to "connect to PC" and do the file transfers.
3. Disconnect from the computer as you should.
4. Go to the reboot tab and reboot it.
5. You will find all the files as they should be.
Now, this has only been tested on my unit with a 256 meg. card in it. But so far, it seems to work okay.
Based on hours of searching the Internet for a solution to this problem, I think I am the only person to come up with this solution to this!
